Mythbuster and Petition: Pierre Pollievre’s Security Clearances CLAIM: In 2025, Pierre Poilievre refused to get the top-secret security clearance necessary for him to read the CSIS report on election interference. He claimed that this would “muzzle” him from speaking about the report’s contents. He further claimed it was unnecessary to requalify for this clearance because he already obtained it as a federal cabinet minister (over 10 years earlier). RESEARCH SUMMARY: For more explanation of expert views on Mr. Pollieve’s stance, see this Global News article . (Scroll down below the video.) According to Jody Thomas (former National Security Advisor to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau), it is possible to hold a political party to account without revealing top secret information.1 All other Canadian federal party leaders obtained their top-secret level security clearance without concern of being silenced.1 2 Prime Minister Mark Carney went through the qualification process to obtain his top-secret clearance, even though he could have received clearance automatically as prime minister. According to Ward Elcock, former Director of Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS):A security clearance from over 10 years ago is no longer valid.1 (Also see The Canadian Directive on Security link 3 below). It is past time for Mr. Pollievre to requalify for his security clearance1 TAKE ACTION: SIGN THE SECURITY CLEARANCE PETITION At a time when our national security is of utmost importance due to threats to our sovereignty, Liberal MP Bruce Fanjoy (Carleton, ON) introduced a petition to Our Commons (E-7148) on February 6, 2026 recommending that all federal party leaders be required to get their top-secret clearance. Canadians may sign the petition here by April 7, 2026. CONCLUSIONBased on interviews with national security experts, the opposition party leader’s claims (the myths) are officially busted.
